A passion for the outdoors led long time college friends Alex Kepner and Mark Tavares to start Project Green. They have since spent the last 8 years hiking, fishing, hunting and doing anything that they can in nature.
I have always had a passion for the outdoors and did everything I could to enjoy it. From hiking, hunting, fishing, to stand up paddleboarding, if it allowed me to be out in nature I loved it. After graduating from high school I mowed lawns for the summers with friends and realized that this is what I really enjoyed doing. I attended Virginia Tech where I majored in landscaping and turfgrass management. A specific major that not only taught me about the industry but gave me the hands on experience to pursue my field well. After college I decided that turf was my specific field and have been focused on the turf application side of the industry since 2008. From day one I have tried to find a solution to the constant use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Over the last 7 years I have been testing organic products to find the right one that is properly suited for our climate and soil makeup.
This may be the strangest thing you ever read on a lawn care website…. My family owns 6 funeral homes, 5 in West Virginia and 1 outside of Charlotte, NC. Yep, it’s true.
Now for a little back story… I attended Virginia Tech, graduating in 2009 with a B.S. in marketing. After school I went back home and worked for my dad as a licensed funeral director and manager of our largest facility. There I learned some valuable lessons about customer service and flexibility. Taking care of families during life’s most difficult moments requires excellent customer service. My experience in customer service will help Project Green take care of what is most important, our customers. Another important lesson I learned was the ability to adapt. We never took care of two families that were alike. At Project Green we know that everyone’s needs are different and must be treated accordingly. We will always adapt to our customers’ needs and wants along with any other environmental factors that are thrown our way.
After spending a few years working in the funeral industry, my wife, Paige, and I decided to move back to her home town of RVA, mostly because of its attractive environment for young families. I worked as an operations manager for a large commercial landscaping firm for almost a year where I also applied chemicals, sometimes up to 5 acres a day. This is when I discovered that most companies are putting very large amount of synthetic chemicals on lawns. After spraying my own lawn I didn’t feel comfortable letting my pregnant wife or pups outside because I knew the chemicals we applied were toxic. That’s when I called Mark. Mark and I started searching for an alternative, one that still gave people a beautiful green lawn but was not as harmful to our environment. Well, happy to say we found it, and thus Project Green was founded! We feel it is our duty as good stewards of this planet to not cause any further harm, so reducing the amount of harmful synthetic chemicals has us moving in the right direction. Thanks for reading my obituary, I mean bio!
