In Richmond, Virginia 99% of our turfgrass is cool season (tall fescue grasses). This means the grass likes to grow through cooler weather. Most cool season grasses grow nicely between September and May when the air and soil temperatures are nice and cool (most of the time), especially with the help of fertilization.
We do 90% of our fertilization during these periods to get the lawn looking its best. Our three applications during the fall each year thicken the root structures of the plant and amend the soil. This creates a healthy soil and creates very healthy plants. We tailor our last application to the improve root zones as they grow all winter long.
We fertilize lightly in the spring and focus on soil health as the weather warms up to give you a great looking lawn all spring. We are very careful this time of year as excess fertilization in the spring can lead to increased disease susceptibility as temperatures rise.
Our last treatment will also add a winter weed control to eliminate all weed activity you might be seeing in the lawn. This will ensure your lawn is looking its best all winter long.
